Just like humans, pets can experience a variety of skin issues that can cause discomfort and irritation. From itchy, dry patches to more serious conditions like allergies or infections, your pet’s skin health is an essential part of their overall well-being. One of the most common issues is dry, flakey skin which occurs more often in the colder months. Pets with dry skin tend to excessively lick, bite and scratch due to which leads to further irritation. Acute Moist Dermatitis, also know as Hot Spots, is another skin issue caused by often licking and scratching which then becomes irritated and infected. The condition presents itself as an open wound on the skin that is painful and can become infected and inflamed.

To relieve symptoms of itchy skin, dryness and irritation of your pets coat, there are a few ways you can try to help soothe their skin. Use a gentle, pet-safe shampoo made for sensitive skin, and avoid over-bathing, as it can dry out their coat. You can also add omega-3 fatty acids to their diet, which may help improve skin health. Keep their bedding clean and free of dust or allergens, and try using a humidifier if the air in your home is very dry. If the itching continues, it’s best to check with your vet.

Another Issue that pets can experience is ear infections. This is most common in pets that have floppy ears as there is reduced airflow and moisture retention within the ear making it easier for bacteria and yeast to grow. To decrease your pets chance of possessing an ear infection ensure to clean pets ears often. If your pet does in fact experience an ear infection, ensure you use medicated ear drops that contain either antibiotics, antifungals or an anti-inflammatory depending on the guidance from your vet.

Fleas and ticks are common pests that can cause severe skin irritation in pets. Flea bites can lead to itching, hair loss, and even secondary infections from excessive scratching. Tick bites can also cause inflammation and, in some cases, transmit diseases.

To combat fleas and ticks it is suggested to use treatments like flea collars, spot-on drops, or tablets that your vet recommends. As a preventative measure, check your pet’s fur often, especially after they’ve been outside. Keep your home clean by vacuuming and washing their bedding and consider trimming your garden to make it less friendly for pests. If you’re not sure what to use, ask your vet for advice.
